Jarvis Christian College is an accredited, private, co-educational, historically black institution that has been affiliated with the Christian Church since its inception. In 1904, Mary Alphin, a state organizer associated with the Negro Disciples of Christ in Texas, in collaboration with the Christian Woman's Board of Missions, began to plan and raise money for a school for black youth. In 1910, Major James Jones Jarvis and his wife Ida deeded 456 acres of land near Hawkins, Texas, to be used for a school for "religious and industrial training." Since then, Jarvis Christian College has continued its mission to prepare its students "intellectually, socially, spiritually, and personally to participate in and contribute to a global and technological society."

Learning at Jarvis Christian College

In addition to offering traditional bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees, as well as a bachelor of business administration, Jarvis offers a bachelor's in science degree leading to certification to teach elementary, middle, and high school grades. This education program is governed by Texas Administrative Code rules and monitored for quality by the Texas Education Agency Division of Educator Standards.

A major and minor field of study is required for Jarvis Christian College's bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees, while the bachelor of business administration requires a major core of courses and a concentration in accounting, computer information systems, marketing, and management.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics — or STEM — studies at Jarvis include academic, research, and outreach areas. Jarvis Christian College has secured several external grant funds to support STEM activities, and there are opportunities for student participation in some of these activities. Jarvis's arts and science division offers three dual degree programs: a nursing degree with the University of Texas at Tyler, an engineering degree with the University of Texas at Arlington, and a mass communications degree with the University of North Texas at Denton.
