Southwestern Christian College wants to offers students an educational experience that will help them build both their academic skills and their moral and spiritual values. The school aims to prepare students for success in a wide range of occupations, whether they choose to work within the church or not. Students will learn not only how to function in a professional capacity but how to live as good Christians as well. Graduates of the schoolís programs should emerge as strong, confident leaders in their home communities and in the world at large.
The College was founded in 1948 by educator and Minister G.P. Bowser. The school gained its current accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1973 and began offering Associateís and Bachelorís degree programs thereafter. Today, students can take courses at the schoolís Terrell, Texas campus outside of Dallas, or through their newly created online courses. The school is affiliated with and operated by the Churches of Christ but students of all denominations are accepted to the school.
Studies at Southwestern Christian College are predominantly centered on Biblical and theological areas, often with the aim of preparing graduates to work in the ministry. Students may also take a range of liberal arts classes to help round out their educations and provide them with relevant historical, communication and social science information. Degrees are offered at both the Associateís and Bachelorís levels and students may choose the program that best suits their particular needs and career goals.
With the creation of an online program, students who might not have otherwise been able to pursue a degree with Southwestern Christian College can now do so. This makes it easier for working adults or those with children to take classes when itís most convenient for them, while still getting the same high quality courses and degrees as on-campus students. Students on campus do have some advantages, however, as they can participate in Southwesternís athletic programs and join clubs and organizations that will allow them to build friendships and build their faith.
