Liberty University was founded in 1971 and is the largest private non-profit university in the nation. Furthermore, it is the largest university in Virginia and the largest Christian university in the world. With its goal to educate students from a Christian worldview, Liberty University has designed numerous academic programs that meet the highest standards for educational quality as well as Christian principles. To further extend the reach of their educational programs to students outside Virginia, Liberty offers more than 150 programs through its distance learning platform. In May 2012, more than 6,500 online students walked across Liberty’s commencement stage and were awarded diplomas.
Online Learning at Liberty University
Liberty University’s online programs are structured around the same Christian worldview as the traditional programs but give students the flexibility to study on a schedule that is more flexible and allows them to pursue other obligations in life. Many of the more than 150 programs offered online from Liberty can be completed entirely online, while others may require short residencies or partial completion on location. The programs range from high school dual credit courses to Doctoral degrees and graduate certificates.
Areas of study include many popular topics, such as business, criminal justice & law, education, healthcare, and nursing, to name a few. Distance-learning programs allow students a much higher level of flexibility with their schedule, as they can choose when to study or work on assignments. Although communication is conducted primarily through virtual means, students can collaborate with classmates and instructors much the same way as traditional students. The programs are equal in academic quality and rigor to the traditional versions but allow distance learners the opportunity to participate in programs they would otherwise be unable to access.
Enrolling at Liberty University
Admittance to Liberty University is determined primarily on the basis of the academic history and readiness of each applicant. Depending on the degree level and type, the necessary supporting documents and standards for academic readiness will vary. For most programs, these standards undergraduates and graduates apply universally:
Prospective Undergraduate Students
- Official high school transcripts
- Official college transcripts
- Minimum GPA of 2.0
- TOEFL scores passing minimum standard (if an international student)
Prospective Graduate Students
- Unofficial college transcripts
- Accredited bachelor’s degree
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Adequate prerequisite courses completed per degree type
- TOEFL scores (if an international student)
Depending on the specific program, students may be subject to additional requirements to be eligible for admission. For example, the RN to BSN program requires a student to hold RN licensure in their state of residence and the BS in Aeronautics degree applicants must hold an FAA commercial pilot certificate or designated military pilot license. Some of the graduate business degree programs may require a student to hold a minimum number of years of professional work experience or higher GPA.
