10 Celebs Who Converted to Christianity

By Ashley Brooks

Celebrities like Madonna and Richard Gere get a lot of attention for converting from their Christian roots to trendy religions like Kabbalah or to Eastern religions like Buddhism. But what about celebrities who convert to Christianity, or who decide to return to their Christian faith after abandoning religion altogether or experimenting with other philosophies? Read on to discover 10 celebrities, including TV stars, iconic music legends and movie stars, who converted to Christianity.

  1. Kirk Cameron: Kirk Cameron was probably the cutest, most popular boy on TV in the 1980s and early 90s. The Growing Pains star seemed to embody basic American values, but before he became hugely famous, Cameron was actually a self-professed atheist. During his late teens, however, Cameron converted to Christianity and became more conservative in his social life and even in the story lines he wished to portray on Growing Pains. Today, Cameron is a well-known evangelist who works with Ray Comfort to promote the ministry program The Way of the Master. Cameron is also a strong supporter of the Left Behind book series and has acted in the first three movie versions of the story.

  2. Tony Fontane: Popular singer Tony Fontane reached his peak in the 1940s and 1950s and even had his own TV show, "The Tony Fontane Show." But in 1957, Fontane was nearly killed in a car accident and abandoned his pop career in order to pursue a gospel singing career. Prior to the accident, Fontane was an atheist, but he claimed that while in a coma after the accident, he had a vision of God offering him another chance. Although he did give up his mainstream career, Fontane did enjoy immense success as one of the biggest gospel singers of his time.

  3. Anne Rice: Anne Rice is a popular novelist who often writes about New Orleans culture and even science fiction or fantastical themes. One of her most famous works, Interview with the Vampire, was even turned into a film starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Rice was a sometime Mormon and atheist but reaffirmed her childhood Catholic roots in 2004, and since then, has only written Christian-focused books.

  4. Bob Dylan: Music legend and pop culture Bob Dylan was raised Jewish but became a Christian in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He went to Bible study classes at the Vineyard School of Discipleship in Reseda, Southern California, and recorded many Christian-themed songs like "I Saw the Light;" however, in an interview with Newsweek’s David Gates, maintained that he doesn’t "adhere to rabbis, preachers, evangelists." In the late 1990s, Dylan was reported to have begun celebrating Jewish occasions and attending Jewish temples.

  5. Larry Flynt: Famed Hustler publisher Larry Flynt is known for promoting sexually explicit content and supporting its right to appear in magazines, quoting the First Amendment. While flying his private plane, Flynt claimed that he had a vision from God and claimed to be a born again Christian, even though he never stopped working for Hustler. The conversion didn’t last, however. Flynt now identifies himself as an atheist.

  6. Faye Dunaway: Academy Award-winning actress Faye Dunaway is a Catholic convert who embraced the religion in 1996. Dunaway starred in well-known films like Bonnie and Clyde, The Thomas Crown Affair, Three Days of Condor, and Mommie Dearest, among others.

  7. C.S. Lewis: Author C.S. Lewis is most famous for creating The Chronicles of Narnia series and The Space Trilogy. His books often follow strong Christian undertones, and while Lewis was baptized in the Church of Ireland, he abandoned his faith as a teenager. When he was 30 years old, Lewis joined the Church of England and welcomed back his Christian faith.

  8. Felix Mendelssohn: The German composer Felix Mendelssohn is still one of the most celebrated musicians of all time. Famous for his Wedding March, various operas, symphonies and concertos, Mendelssohn was born to a Jewish father who renounced his religion. Mendelssohn was brought up without any religious guidance or beliefs, but he was eventually baptized as a Christian when he was five years old.

  9. Jane Fonda: Jane Fonda, daughter of Henry Fonda, is a successful actress and celebrity who was born in New York City in 1937. Besides her acting, Fonda is also an outspoken political activist who has opposed the Vietnam War, the treatment of Native Americans, and the Iraq War. In 2001, Fonda became a born-again Christian, which may have played a role in her divorce from Ted Turner. But while Fonda publicly announced her conversion, she also maintained that unlike some Christians, she did not support "bigotry, discrimination [or] dogma."

  10. George Foreman: Heavyweight Boxing Champion-turned-grilling phenomenon George Foreman had a near-death experience after a 12-round fight against Jimmy Young, in 1977. Foreman prayed that God would give him a second chance and help him change his life, and after the experience, Foreman became a born again Christian. He became an ordained minister of his own church, opened a youth center, and frequently collaborates with The 700 Club and Trinity Broadcasting Network.

Liberty University Paved the Way for Online Christian Colleges

Liberty University is a school founded on deeply rooted Baptist beliefs and traditions, resulting in the largest evangelical university in the world.  However, the school has also become one of the largest online Christian colleges, with the vast majority of its students taking courses via distance learning options.  Online course offerings within the school offer degrees in 36 different fields, as well as an opportunity for many Christian students to study from home instead of moving to Virginia.

Due to the rising success as an online Christian college that Liberty has sustained, other Christian colleges have been influenced to expand their course offerings throughout the internet and help attract promising young students to their degree programs.  Christian colleges come in a variety of forms although Liberty University depicts one of the most traditional types of Christian colleges, compared to the new classical Christian college that has emerged around the country.  Rather than focus on Greek philosophy and condone various doctrines that have emerged, Liberty University offers most distance learning students the chance to earn a slew of degrees without the addition of any particularly religious classes.

Online Christian colleges serve the purpose of allowing students to take classes from home from a college they would feel comfortable in attending if they had the option to move across the country.  While the university does not promote religion through its degree programs, its notoriety as a high-profiled Christian university has increased its appeal to many students who wish to attend such a university.  Since it began offering online classes, the university has tripled its enrollment, proving to other Christian universities that if they begin to transfer their classes to online credits, they will be able to sustain a higher population of students.

Despite the controversial aspects many of these schools have been debated over, the schools remain profitable institutions and still offer students the comfort of attending an online Christian college.  As the network has expanded over the years, students now have more options other than Liberty University, but the school remains one of the top rated online schools despite its Christian background.  Offering more than 30 degree programs which rival other online universities, the school has maintained its course schedules and works well with its distance learning students in a way that was unprecedented in the online Christian college community.  As more schools pop up every day, it is no surprise that we have begun to find a more niche group of online Christian colleges and before long there will be an online college for every religion, but until that point, Liberty University remains the model for most online Christian colleges today.

Top Christian Colleges Around the Nation

Top Christian colleges are always ranked according to different scales: which has the highest graduation rate, highest retention rate, or best degree programs offered.  However, the lists that simply rank the best Christian colleges according to their students include many different colleges around the nation that offer students the opportunity to thrive in a university of like-minded individuals while still earning their education from a highly accredited university.

Wheaton College in Illinois is typically one of the higher ranked schools on lists, and is ranked 9th in the nation for its total number of graduates.  One of the more attractive qualities of the school is its low student/faculty ratio, staying around 12 to 1.  This is a better number than many small liberal arts universities around the nation, making it that much more attractive to students who want to enroll in a small liberal arts college that caters to their religious beliefs.

Bethel College in Indiana is another top ranked Christian college which offers a wide array of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in many different disciplines.  This college offers many degree options, ranging from associates degrees to masters programs and attracts students from any type of background.  The mission statement of the school remains to prepare students for a future in any industry, but also to equip them with the skills necessary to give back to their community and their Church.

Bethel University in Minnesota is likely to be confused with Bethel College but offers different opportunities for its students.  This school caters to more than 6,200 students from around the nation and offers bachelors and advanced degrees in over 100 fields.  Producing many education majors, the school has an outstanding program in education and has committed itself to producing students who both follow Christ and strive to change the world.

Azusa Pacific University is another top Christian college which has appealed to students around the country due both to its location in California as well as its course offerings.  Offering online courses, it remains one of the first Christian colleges (aside from Liberty University) to extend its degree programs to the distance learning community.  The school boasts impressive degree programs and seeks to integrate students into its culture and remind their students of their ability to accept individuals of any background.

Each state has their own top Christian college, and we have only scratched the surface of the many universities around the nation that cater to Christian values and educational commitments.  However, it is really up to you as a prospective student to better research the background of different Christian colleges in order to make a better informed decision for the future.

California Christian Colleges: Meant for Everyone in the Sunshine State

Christian colleges have greatly evolved from their original standing as schools that cater exclusively to students who cater to a specific belief now to schools that are open to students of any belief.  California is one state which has a number of Christian colleges to choose from, up and down the state, with more emerging every year.  The large amount of colleges has appealed to students around the nation who want a solid educational background in an environment which is comfortable to them.

Christian colleges have changed from many stringent policies which were in place decades ago, but have still retained their morals. As a result, many parents are more comfortable sending their recent high school graduates to schools they know will not support the popular “party mode” of most college students.  In order to appeal to the wider masses, Christian colleges have changed their selection processes, and slowly have begun to offer a greater amount of degree plans, so that students from any background can attend the school without feeling ostracized.  California has paved the way for this type of school and has allowed students from any religious background to find their way in their many Christian colleges.

Most of the Christian colleges in California do not even appear to be this type of university, and their campuses look like any other school.  Students do not need to feel as if they are attending a school that has less of a future for their career or will make them choose a certain career path; Christian colleges in California now offer extensive degree programs and have expanded many of their school activities to appeal to students all over the nation.  California is a great place to spend four years, and these schools have quickly been placed into the limelight of Christian colleges.

Many of these Christian colleges have also begun to offer online courses to their students, in effect expanding their student population even further.  California currently has the most expansive Christian college system, and has managed to keep its student population on a steadily rising pattern.  While the state itself offers a great incentive for students, the new appeal of Christian colleges has attracted students who would not have imagined themselves at a similar institution only a few years ago.   California seems set to develop even more Christian colleges in the next few years, as the popularity of their current schools has skyrocketed.
